Well I recently crossed the border from Mexico, into the US, and then back into Mexico again. It's funny I've heard about all this armed conflict. I've heard how Mexico is unsafe, the entire country is to be avoided.

The truth is that the major violence that we've all heard so much about is in a town about 400 miles away from here, about as far as Vegas is from Salt Lake. I'm female and I've driven the 60 or so miles to the border, alone, about 20 times, all without incident.

On the day this picture was taken, the mood was relaxed and friendly. The border guards were friendly, joking around a little bit. I'd go so far as to say the mood was jovial.

There are great deals to be had on beachfront, luxury housing, as a result of negative publicity and the market. Check us out!

Several days ago I needed to drive up to the border from Puerto Penasco/Rocky Point Mexico. It was a Wednesday morning, I'm female and I was alone. To get from Penasco to the border, it's necessary to drive through a sparsely populated stretch of about 60 miles.

Well I made it in one piece and without mishap. I wish I could have gotten a better shot, but I was trying to be discreet. These are the Mexcian border guards, and they're pretty much waving most of the cars through. Indeed, about an hour later, when I crossed back, they waved me through too. The atmosphere was casual and relaxed and the waves were friendly.

I've made this drive alone about 20 times. I've never had a frightening encounter enroute, nor do I know of anyone who has. The reports of violence have been greatly exagerated. There are pockets of violence, much as in many other countries, including the United States.

Safety and Security

According to the United Nations, you're 3 times more likely to be a victim of crime in the U.S. than you are in Mexico.

Recent FBI statistics state that the murder rate (per 100,000 people) in Baltimore is 43.3... in Washington DC it is 29.1...and in Detroit 47.3... But in Mexico, it is 13. There are certain areas in Los Angeles, Washington or Detroit that you should avoid. That's where the

crimes happen. Likewise there are isolated areas in Mexico (like parts of Mexico City and some areas along the border) that should be avoided.

Health Care

Government-funded health care uses the same high-tech medical procedures that are available in the U.S., but medical insurance only costs only $270 per year including medications, with no deductibles or co-pays. There are countless state-of-the-art hospitals and care homes being built for the aging baby boomers arriving from north of the border.

Low Cost of Living

A couple can live comfortably for well under $2,000 per month including a housekeeper. Utilities average one third of the cost in the U.S. You can get car insurance for less than $400 a year.

Economy

According to U.S. government figures, Mexico's economy moved ahead of Canada's last year, making it the 12th largest economy in the world. Business Week reported that Mexico's middle class has swelled to record levels and solid jobs provide security. Mexico is one of the world's largest oil exporters selling 1.7 billion barrels of oil to the U.S. each day.

Infrastructure

This year, Mexico's government launched a 5-year, $250 billion program to build new highways, railways, airports and ports throughout the country. Mexico has a First-World infrastructure, including high-speed internet, mobile telephone networks, high-tech medicine, paved multi-lane freeways and much more.

Pelicans - Puerto Penasco/Rocky Point Mexico

I've only lately come to really appreciate the Pelican. It seems they're often presented in a somewhat ungainly light. They're a bit awkward on land, true, but in their element, they're perfect.

Pelicans fish and breed in social groups. If you've ever seen a group of them flying, you'll see they travel with the precision of a flock of Canadian Geese. When they circle to fish, they move with a choreographed symmetry that would rival a synchronized swimming team. And they dive with the bold confidence of winning NASCAR drivers.

On the beaches around Cholla Bay Mexico, near Puerto Penasco/Rocky Point, I had to good fortune of spending some time up close to these marvels. A fisherman was cleaning some fish and they were waiting around, eager for some castaway morsels.

Contrary to popular belief, they do not store fish in their elastic bills. They use them to scoop up fish. Then they tip out the water (as much as 31/2 gallons!) and immediately swallow the fish.

There are over half a dozen species of pelicans. The North American Brown Pelican is endangered but recovering. Mostly due to the reduction of our use of certain chemicals that were damaging their eggs (DDT).

One of the wonderful things I enjoy about living here are the opportunities I've had to be exposed to the wildlife. It is a beautiful life!

How to read a tide calendar - Puerto Penasco/Rocky Point Mexico

If you visit a place with a tide and look in the back of nearly any magazine directed at tourists, you're likely to see a tide calendar. Since moving to Rocky Point/Puerto Penasco, I've seen probably a dozen. They are useful if you're planning a hike or a picnic, a seaside event like a wedding or if you're planning to do some boating. But they all seem to share one annoying trait - no legend.
Many visitors to oceanside locations originate from more landlocked areas, and not having grown up around the tide and tide calendars, they don't have a clue how to use one. A tool isn't much good if you don't know how to use it. So, with that in mind, I offer the following:
Along the left side of the calendar, you should see a column of vertical numbers. These indicate the number of feet the tide is in or out. Along the bottom you'll see times, these may be expressed in military time, in which case, 00 is midnight, 12 is noon, 20 is 8 pm, 22 is 10 pm, etc. There will be boxes that will usually contain the date and day of the week - just like a regular calendar.
Running through these calendar boxes will be a wavy vertical line. This is the business part of it. The wavy line will divide the box roughly in half, top to bottom. The bottom portion of any box is sand and the top portion is water. There, you've got it. Find your day and time and look at the picture. If the bottom, the sand, goes way out, then you've got a low tide. If there is little "sand" and lots of water, it's high tide.

The Biggest Strawberry I Ever Ate - Puerto Penasco/Rocky Point Mexico

I bought this basket of strawberries on February 4 from a local street vendor. Just your standard plastic mesh basket. I didn't get too far into the berries before I discovered this beauty. So I posed it next to a tennis ball before I bit in, yummmm!
Oh, the season is a bit early here, I bought a basket of cherries that same day.
